Keeping cool in the weather

The Westminster Home Energy Advice Service is here to help you stay comfortable and safe during the summer with the following important tips:

  • Keep sunlight out: close curtains and blinds during the day to block out the sun and keep your home cool.
  • Let the breeze in: open windows when it's cooler outside, typically at night, to let in fresh air.
  • Stay hydrated: drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol, tea, and coffee which can dehydrate you. Go for water-rich foods like fruits and salads.
  • Keep cool: wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Move to a cooler room, especially when sleeping. Take cool showers and avoid physical activity during the hottest parts of the day, usually between 11 am and 3 pm.

For free personalised advice on keeping your home cool and energy-efficient this summer, book a home visit with our independent energy advisers to benefit from our free keeping cool materials.
