Greening Westminster projects

Find out about how the Greening Westminster fund has helped our communities build green spaces.

St John’s Wood Adventure Playhub

The Adventure Playhub received ‘Open Spaces Greener Places’ (OSGP) Funding in 2021 as part of their proposal to upgrade elements of the play equipment.

By being awarded the OSGP funding, the Adventure Playhub was then able to approach other funders and benefactors and successfully raised double the original grant. The project received funding to replace the old, rotting outdoor adventure play structures, which were reaching their end of life, and the general play area needed some TLC.

With the Playhub’s in-house building manager, a new design was created through a set of drawings which included an ambitious two-storey look-out tower. The tower uses reclaimed materials such as recycled doors with colour inlays to create framed views from the top platform. The Playhub even managed to source a reclaimed gas lamp from Westminster Bridge to sit atop the structure as a colourful beacon.

The new modern play equipment improves and enhances the outdoor play space.

The Adventure Playhub serves many different groups of local children, mostly being used as after-school and school holiday clubs. The nearby Robinsfield and Barrow Hill schools are close, and the children are picked up via a ‘walking bus’ by Playhub coordinators. During the school holidays, the Play Hub provides full-day enriching activities for children living in Westminster who are eligible for Free School Meals and experiencing disadvantage through the HAF and Westminster funding, reaching hundreds of children every year.
