Greening Westminster projects

Find out about how the Greening Westminster fund has helped our communities build green spaces.

The Onion Garden

The Onion Garden is an organic garden run by the “chief onion” Jens Jakobsen.

The garden secured £24,551 in funding from the Greening Westminster programme in 2023 and now includes over 150 species, including herbs, wildflowers, and fruit trees.

It sits just behind Westminster City Hall in a previously unused pocket of paved space between buildings. The project has allowed members of the local community to have a hand in bringing the garden to life. People from all walks of life use the space, which has been well-received by the wider community. A café forms a part of the Onion Garden, currently located in the new glasshouse.

Longer-term plans are for the café to move to a new pavilion, allowing the glasshouse to be used as an events space.
