What you throw away

Find out ways to reduce your carbon emissions by making some small changes to what you throw away.

Food waste

We are rolling out our food waste recycling collection service for residents across the whole of Westminster. We should be able to offer a collection service to every suitable home by the end of 2022.

Since around 30% of household waste is food waste, using this service is an important way of reducing your climate impact. All the food waste we collect will be sent for anaerobic digestion outside London. This process saves carbon emissions compared to putting food waste in the rubbish.

Reduce, Re-use, then Recycle

This food waste recycling service is a good option for inedible food such as peelings or food scraps. However, you should try and avoid throwing away edible food wherever possible.

Reduce unused food: Do make a list when you go to the supermarket or shop online, so that you only buy the food you will use. Love Food Hate Waste has lots of tips to help you shop efficiently and use all the food you buy. You might be surprised at how many food items can simply be frozen to make them last longer.

Re-Use unused food: If you do end up with food that’s still good to eat but you’re not going to use it, use the Olio app to find someone nearby who will take it off your hands.
