Policy and Scrutiny

See how our award-winning scrutiny team support the council’s ongoing commitment to quality, transparent and effective governance.

The four committees and the Commission

Councils must appoint at least one committee to provide 'overview and scrutiny' of the council.

There are five Policy and Scrutiny committees in our borough:

The work programmes for the Policy and Scrutiny committees are developed at the start of the municipal year in the month of May. However, important issues can be added at any time.

The Policy and Scrutiny committees also commission Task Groups and Single Member Studies to work on specific projects of interest, which produce research reports and generally include recommendations.

Findings from these groups are then provided to the relevant Policy and Scrutiny committee and the recommendations are presented to the cabinet member or partner organisation.
