Keep your noise down

Complete silence in a city is unrealistic, but there are simple ways to avoid disturbing those around you.

Car alarms

A vehicle alarm that is sounding continuously or intermittently and is affecting residents is a nuisance. The council can serve a Noise Abatement Notice on the vehicle owner/registered keeper/driver, requiring the alarm to be deactivated within an hour.

If we can locate the owner

Once the owner has been located we allow a reasonable amount of time to de-activate the alarm, extending the one hour limit if necessary.

If we can’t locate the owner

If the alarm isn't turned off after an hour and the owner isn't found, we can deactivate the alarm.

We use specialist companies to do this, and take every care not to cause damage.

If we can't unlock the door, we can break a window - but this is rare.

If the alarm can't be turned off by the specialists, we may tow the car.

Once we deactivate the alarm

We won't leave your vehicle unsecured - if we can't secure it, we will tow it.

If we enter your car, we will leave a note and we will write to you if your address is known.

The police will be informed.
