Planning enforcement guide

Find out when and how we enforce planning controls.

What we will do

Upon receipt of your report of a potential breach of planning control, we will send you a letter of acknowledgement with the name and contact telephone number of the planning inspector assigned to the case. The inspector will try to visit the site within 5 working days to obtain detailed factual information and photographs regarding the alleged breach of planning control.

In the case of unauthorised works to a listed building, the inspector will try to inspect the site the same day or the following day from the date the report is received.

We will review the inspector’s final report to determine whether any action can or should be taken and notify you in writing within 8 weeks of our decision. If it appears that there is a breach of planning control and we decide to continue our investigation, we will send you the contact details of the case officer handling the investigation, who can update you on its progress.

If at any time you would like an update on the investigation, please contact your case officer. The Planning Enforcement Team aims to return all telephone calls, including voice mail messages, within 24 hours.
