Planning enforcement guide

Find out when and how we enforce planning controls.

How you can help

We value the information we receive from members of the public and resident’s groups concerning possible breaches of planning control.

It supplements the evidence we obtain from official records and site inspections. When reporting a potential breach please supply as much information as possible about the current and previous situation including:

  • the exact address
  • when activities started
  • the nature of the building works or use and the names, addresses and telephone numbers of known owners or other persons responsible.

We will make every effort to safeguard the confidentiality of individuals who make a report.

If an appeal is made against an enforcement notice, all complainants will be notified and asked if they wish to submit additional representations or to appear independently at a public inquiry or hearing to support our case.

Please note that any representations made at the appeal stage must become public documents.
