The Making of Chinatown touring exhibition 2021

London Chinatown old image from archive

Westminster City Hall’s Community Gallery will be hosting The Making of Chinatown exhibition until 15 September 2021. The exhibition will be free and open from 10am until 5pm, Monday to Friday.

The Making of Chinatown exhibition, curated by Chinese Arts Now, presents both the factual historical imagery and text documenting the development of the area along with video installations of living histories of the people that lived, worked in and helped shape the area into what is now considered an iconic cultural precinct in London.

Through in-depth oral history interviews and materials from both established and personal archives, this exhibition shows how Chinatown was made and what it means to the people who have contributed to its development.

This exhibition marks the beginning of the process to document formally for the first time the history of this iconic part of London.

The exhibition also presents Augmented Chinatown 2.0. an app from the UK’s leading platform for British Chinese art, Chinese Arts Now, producers and creators of art telling Chinese stories in contemporary and innovative ways.

London’s Chinatown, and the area it sits in, has been the stage for a multitude of stories over its constantly evolving history. Augmented Chinatown 2.0 brings some of those stories to life in an immersive augmented reality experience which mixes striking visuals, miniature audio dramas, atmospheric music and a guided tour through the area’s past and present and how it became the centre of the Chinese community in London.

You can find the app on App Store and Google Play, but you can download a scene for free in the exhibition.
