Citizens’ Climate Action Committee

The committee helps share resident views on climate policy and climate projects to support collective action across the city.

The Westminster Citizens’ Climate Assembly (WCCA) was convened in the summer of 2023. This was part of our commitment to improving the representation of residents’ views in how we collectively tackle the climate emergency and achieve our net zero targets.

WCCA Recommendation 8 called on us to: “review, adapt and act - we expect the council to reconvene the Citizens’ Climate Assembly annually, regardless of political affiliation and independent of the election cycle, to account for its progress and to re-state goals in light of any shortfall.”

In response to this recommendation, a ‘Citizens’ Climate Action Committee’ (CCAC) has been established. The CCAC is an opportunity for Citizens’ Climate Assembly members and other interested residents, including members of the Register of Active Residents and Westminster Youth Council, to input on climate policy and project making and support collective action across Westminster.

At biannual meetings, the CCAC discuss climate action progress, key challenges and opportunities and provide feedback to inform council decision making. The CCAC is co-chaired by the Cabinet Member for Climate, Ecology and Culture and a community representative.

First meeting, 3 April 2024

At the first CCAC meeting, members discussed climate action progress, the upcoming updated Climate Emergency Action Plan and Progress Report and their lived experience of climate impacts (such as flooding, extreme heat and storms) to support the creation of a ‘Climate Risk and Vulnerability Assessment’ for the city.
