Grit and dust problems

Find out about grit and dust problems, and the types of issues we can and cannot investigate.

Grit and dust problems we can investigate

Grit and dust in the air can be caused by:

  • home DIY
  • construction
  • building works
  • vehicles or machinery

Grit and dust in the air can become a problem if it:

  • interferes with the use or enjoyment of your home
  • affects your health

If you make a report of a grit or dust problem, an officer will review your report within one hour.

Building and construction sites

We require that building and construction sites take measures to control grit and dust emissions where possible. If a building or construction site is not doing this, you can make a report to us.

Large construction sites must monitor their dust levels using automatic monitoring equipment.

Grit and dust we cannot investigate

We cannot investigate grit and dust that is caused by:

  • a single event with an unknown source
  • area-wide or national air quality episodes
  • metrological conditions
