Artificial light problems

Find out about artificial light problems and the types of issues we can and cannot investigate.

Artificial light problems we can investigate

Artificial light sources can include:

  • security lights
  • the decorative lighting of buildings
  • light shows or lasers
  • lit billboards or advertisements
  • the floodlights of sports venues (such as football pitches)

You can read about how we manage light pollution in our environmental guidance.

Artificial light can become a problem if it:

  • interferes with the use or enjoyment of your home
  • affects your health (for example, keeping you from falling asleep at night)

If you make a report of an artificial light problem, an officer will review your report within four working days.

Artificial light we cannot investigate

We cannot investigate artificial light problems caused by:

  • streetlights
  • prisons
  • bus or train stations
  • goods vehicle operating centres

You can read more about the types of artificial light not covered by nuisance laws.

If a streetlight is broken, you can make a report about the fault instead.
