What's Next

Keep up to date with the latest releases and planned activities related to the Air Quality Data Platform.

Recent Releases

Air Quality data download

Where we have permission to share the air quality data we present on our website, you can now download it fully in CSV format.

This currently includes diffusion tube data and diffusion tube bias adjusted data. Full details are available on our air quality data download webpage.

School Street data

Our air quality data was collected from the Schools Streets trials, which ran from 2022 to 2023. You can view this using our Trend Analysis tool by:

  1. Selecting 'All Sites'
  2. Choosing the date range you are interested in
  3. Selecting the school of interest

Historic Air Quality data

Where available, our Air Quality sensor/continuous monitoring station data has been loaded back to 2018. You can view this using our Trend Analysis tool by entering the date period you are interested by:

  1. Selecting 'All Sites'
  2. Choosing the date range you are interested in

New features on our roadmap

We are constantly reviewing and updating the data platform with new and valuable features. Here are some examples of features we are currently working on and will soon release.

Interactive reports presenting traffic count data from sensors installed outside schools participating in the Schools Healthy Commutes project.

Traffic count sensors are installed outside:

  • Wilberforce Primary School
  • St Saviour's Church of England Primary School
  • George Eliot Primary School
  • Essendine Primary School

The data from these sensors will be presented on our website in near real-time views and interactive charts. This will help show changes in traffic outside schools for engagement and evaluation purposes.

New air quality data sets from the Strand Aldwych Project

The Strand Aldwych scheme was completed in December 2022 and comprised of the removal of the Aldwych gyratory, creating a two-way traffic flow around Aldwych and a new public space on the Strand between Lancaster Place and Surrey Street, with limited access for motorised vehicles (loading and access to a few buildings). One of its key objectives was to address air quality across the whole project area, reduce traffic in some areas, mitigate the effects of traffic in other areas, and work with partners to influence, lobby, and explore opportunities for positive change.

In 2017, we conducted an air pollution study through NO2 monitoring before the scheme was implemented and modelled the expected scenario after the scheme's completion. Between March and October 2023, we conducted another air quality study and are currently reviewing the data collected. Final results will be made public by Summer 2024.

In parallel to the council air pollution studies, King's College London and ReSET (Restarting Economy in Support of Environment, through Technology), a Horizon 2020-funded research project, have been collecting air and noise pollution data in the area since June 2021. The council has been supporting their work and expects that in the near future, their final conclusions on the impact of the scheme implemented will also be made available.

New air quality data sets from the Soho Project

We are leading the Soho Monitoring Study, which collects detailed traffic and movement, noise levels, and air quality data from across Soho over a twelve-month period.

The project aims to provide a better understanding of the public realm across the neighbourhood. The data will help us understand spaces that are busy and those that are quiet, those that experience heavier vehicle traffic and those that are dominated by pedestrians, areas of clean air, and spikes in pollution.

To allow pollutant levels across Soho to be measured, five long-term unattended air quality monitors are installed. These monitors will continuously record pollutant levels over 12 months. The long-term monitoring locations will be supported by low-resolution diffusion tube measurements across 20 sites. The monitoring will allow pollutant levels across Soho to be clearly presented and reviewed against recognised UK guidance.
