Why do we need a Hate Crime Commission?
Over a recent 12-month period, there were more than 1,500 racist and religious hate crimes reported in Westminster – nearly double that of the next highest borough.
This is at odds with our City Survey results, where 84% of residents tell us people get on well together.
We attract over a million visitors a day. A high concentration of London’s night life is based in the West End and our borough is the venue for many national, polarising protests.
Our location in the heart of London means we need to be at the forefront of tackling hate crime in the capital.
The independent commission will look at why hate crime reports are on the rise, investigate the barriers to tackling it, and make recommendations on how to improve reporting rates and better support victims.
