Council puts cost of living support at heart of new Fairer Westminster strategy

Help for Westminster residents weathering the cost-of-living crisis is being rolled out as part of a multi-million strategy for families struggling with soaring bills.

An exciting new council-wide strategy called Fairer Westminster, was officially launched today that sets out how the Council will work with its communities to tackle inequality, support our communities, and listen to residents, including how it will continue to target those hit hardest by the financial maelstrom rocking the country.

The overarching blueprint highlights the key priorities for Westminster City Council’s new administration over the short and longer term.

From improving facilities, tackling rogue landlords, supporting ethical employers, and engaging with communities, Fairer Westminster will have a major impact across the borough.

The key announcements include:

  • Ensuring no child goes hungry with a £5.6m cost of living package including holiday activity and food programmes.
  • Creating more social and truly affordable homes.
  • Helping the next generation of entrepreneurs develop their business skills.
  • Introducing additional secure cycle parking spaces by spring next year.
  • Pursuing new ways to help residents access the cost-of-living support available to them.

Cllr Adam Hug Leader of Westminster City Council, said:

Rising bills across the board, from food to fuel, mean many people face a bleak winter. That is why help with the cost-of-living crisis is at the centre of our new Fairer Westminster programme unveiled today.

Delivering for local people, further help for those struggling, and supporting all our communities   are the cornerstones of this Council.  We have already made an ambitious start, but that work will intensify as poverty becomes a real prospect for many and we look forward to working with our residents, businesses and partners to build a Fairer Westminster.

But there’s more to come. A number of announcements on fairer housing will be made later throughout this autumn, and we will push forward with the Council’s campaign to stop Westminster being used as an international financial laundromat for dirty money invested by oligarchs.
