Many children in Westminster have been keeping busy outdoors after more than 1,000 Bug Hotels were given out by the council.

The activity allows children to get connected with nature as the printout design welcomes bugs and other insects into their patch.

Backyard Nature, a campaign developed by social enterprise Semble, produced the packs which were sent to the council and distributed to 1,250 schools, nurseries, youth clubs and childminders.

The children colour in the printout, cut around it, fold it and place sticks or bark inside to create a little haven for all sorts of critters to live in.

Samuel, aged three, is one of the children who has been enjoying the Bug Hotel which has been placed in a sheltered spot in his garden.

He said: “I like my Bug Hotel and looking at all the bugs!”

Samuel’s mum was pleased with receiving the activity pack and said it was a “great afternoon activity for us to do together”.

Cllr Timothy Barnes, Westminster City Council Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said: “These Bug Hotels are a great way for children to engage with nature and to learn about all different insects and bugs. It’s another example of how we are working with our partners to ensure those children who are not able to go back to nursery or school for the time being, have access to materials where they can learn in a fun, active way.”

Amanda Horton-Mastin, CEO of Semble, added: "It’s great to see so many kids in Westminster join in the Backyard Nature bugs mission! We’ve been working with a bunch of brilliant partners to inspire kids across the city - and the country - to protect bugs and other wildlife on their local patch. You can find out more and get involved at BackyardNature.org."
