Three of our housing estates have once again received Green Flag Awards for quality green spaces.
Churchill Gardens, Lillington and Longmoore Gardens estates in Pimlico and Lisson Green in Marylebone, have all retained their Green Flag status for another year. Lillington and Longmoore Gardens received its 14th award in a row, while Churchill received the award for the eighth and Lisson Green in Marylebone for the fifth time.
This is an outstanding achievement for our staff that work hard to keep our estate gardens clean, green and well maintained for everyone. Parks and open spaces have become more important than ever this year for our communities, with residents using them to relax and exercise during lockdown and we’re very excited that the wonderful spaces in our estates have been recognised. As well as our housing estate Green Flags, we also have another 25 Green Flags at our quality parks across the city.
Iris Warwick, a member of the gardening committee at Churchill Gardens estate, said:
“Churchill Gardens is a very large green estate in the middle of London, we have numerous wonderful trees and shrubs as well as green area too. The residents of the estate are always commenting on how the estate environment is so well looked after. We have many garden areas, including the Millennium Garden, the Riverside Garden and the Meadow Garden. We also have a central square where residents can meet for a chat along with their neighbours. Due to our estate being well maintained, we have been very fortunate in receiving the merit of the Green Flag for some years now, the residents were very pleased that Churchill Gardens was awarded the Green Flag again for 2020.”
Cllr David Harvey, Cabinet Member for Housing Services, said:
“Our fantastic gardens and well-kept green open spaces bring such joy to people in our city, particularly during these testing times. We appreciate the immeasurable value a park can bring to a community, offering enormous mental and physical health benefits, and we are constantly striving for a greener and cleaner city. I’m very proud that yet again, our housing estates have been recognised for their quality green spaces. I want to dedicate the Green Flag Awards to our staff who work tirelessly to maintain the wonderful open spaces.”
The Green Flag Award Scheme is run by Keep Britain Tidy and assesses the quality of public parks and green spaces as well as recognising their diversity and value to the local community. The park, garden or green space is judged against criteria which ranges from sustainability, conservation to marketing.
