Suspensions and permanent exclusions

Find out what action a school needs to take if a child is suspended or permanently excluded from school.

For the vast majority of pupils, suspensions (formerly known as fixed-periodterm exclusions) and permanent exclusions may not be necessary, as other strategies can manage behaviour.

If approaches towards behaviour management have been exhausted, then suspensions and permanent exclusions will sometimes be necessary as a last resort. This is to ensure that other pupils and teaching staff are protected from disruption and can learn in safe, calm, and supportive environments.

This section includes guidance for schools on the suspension or exclusion process, with links to relevant Department for Education guidance.

There are also template letters for schools to use to communicate with parents or carers when they have decided to suspend or exclude a child from school.

The referral form used to ensure any child of compulsory school age who has been permanently excluded from school and is referred to alternative provision is also available in this section.

All policies and procedures can be obtained from the Admissions and Access to education Team.

The team are based at Kensington Town Hall, 2nd Floor Green Zone, Hornton Street, W8 7NX or you can call 020 7745 6614 or email [email protected].
