Cleaner air for our residents

Westminster suffers from the worst air pollution in the country. With 9.9 million drivers in the capital and 370 million miles driven in Westminster each year, road transport contributes to more than half of the most deadly emissions.

We’re working to help our communities breathe easy through our #DontBeIdle campaign. This involves working with our contractors to sign up and support our campaign. Morgan Sindall, our repairs contractors, have pledged not to idle their current vans and have introduced several electronic vans that will be out and about on our estates.

Gary McFarlane, partnership director at Morgan Sindall Property Services, said:

“We are proud to support the Don’t Be Idle campaign. We have over 400 vans, so looking at ways to introduce electric vans to reduce our environmental impact is a good place to start. We’re also delivering ‘tool box talks’ to encourage our staff to turn off their engines to reduce carbon emissions.”

Cllr Andrew Smith, Westminster City Council cabinet member for housing services, said:

“Our aim is to improve the quality of our homes, inside and out, for our residents. This is part of one of our biggest City for All aims – to create a greener, cleaner city for all. Air pollution affects us all and can have many negative effects. That’s why we’re determined to work in partnership with residents, contractors and visitors to clean up our air, not just for Westminster, but our capital city as a whole.”

Air pollution affects us all - but we can all do something to change it. Find out more about #DontBeIdle or take the pledge online (opens new window). With one click, you’re lending your voice to helping us create a greener, cleaner future for everyone.
