Your tenancy

As a Westminster City Council tenant you have a tenancy agreement between you and the council. 

It lets you know:

• your rights and responsibilities as a tenant
• Westminster City Council’s responsibilities as your landlord

It is important that you are aware of the conditions as it may affect your tenancy if you do not keep to them.  We want to help you to do this so get in touch if you have any questions.

Not all tenancies are the same. Westminster City Council offers introductory, flexible and secure tenancies:

• if you are a new council tenant then you will have received an introductory tenancy for the first year of your tenancy followed by a flexible tenancy for a fixed term of either two or five years and at the end of the fixed term a decision will be made on whether your tenancy is to be renewed
• if your tenancy started before September 2013 then you are an introductory or secure tenant and will receive another secure tenancy if you move to a different council property
• secure tenancies are also offered if you are a new tenant moving into community supportive (sheltered) housing and you are aged 60 years and above.

Secure tenancies have no end date and you would normally have the right to stay in your home for as long as you want. However, these tenancies can sometimes be brought to an end by the landlord with a court order if, for example, you have not kept to the terms of the tenancy agreement.
