Westminster's cycling revolution

Wed, 10/06/2020

Westminster City Council is set to deliver 11km of additional cycle lanes across the city, making it easier than ever to tour the heart of London on two wheels.

As lockdown measures ease and London’s streets begin to get busier once again, a network of temporary bike lanes across Westminster’s famous streets has been created, encouraging more residents, commuters, and visitors that ever before to make their journey via bike.

As these new schemes are rolled out, Westminster will see over 11km of additional cycle routes on some of the country’s most famous streets, allowing both seasoned and newly-converted cyclists to travel from key landmarks and major transport hubs with ease. Victoria Station to Parliament Square, Marylebone Road to Regent Street, and Paddington Station to Bayswater Road mark just some of the newly laid out routes.

Cllr Andrew Smith, Cabinet Member for Highways & Environment:

“As lockdown measures are eased, we expect to see a dramatic increase in the number of people walking and cycling across Westminster. To respond to this, we are delivering an extensive network of temporary cycle lanes across the city to make it easier than ever before to travel via bike.”

“We hope that these new routes will not only support the safe re-opening of our city, but also help to encourage the use of cleaner and more sustainable forms of transport across the board.”

In order to support this new infrastructure and the influx of new cyclists onto the streets, over 800 new temporary cycle spaces have also been installed around the city.

These changes come as part of the local authority’s wider movement strategy, making positive changes to streets and highways to enable people safely travel around the city as Covid-19 lockdown measures ease. The council has been working to develop these important temporary proposals in conjunction with local groups, residents and businesses around the city.

All areas of Westminster will be covered by activity to encourage people to move safely around the City as the lockdown restrictions are lifted.

Some of the key temporary cycle routes include:

Marylebone Road - Regent Street

Paddington – Bayswater Road

Parliament Square - Lambeth Bridge

Victoria Station - Parliament Square

Buckingham Palace Road

Trafalgar Square - Victoria Embankment

Grosvenor Road - Vauxhall Bridge Road
