Team Westminster is Westminster City Council's flagship volunteering programme. There are many ways to volunteer with us, and 3 different programmes available. Join as many of the programmes as you like, and get involved as much or as little as you want!

Team Westminster Active

If you’re interested in sport, Team Westminster Active can help you find a voluntary role with a sports club.

Develop your skills in coaching and refereeing and help with training and funding.

Team Westminster Ambassadors

Volunteering in the heart of London has its advantages with the chance to volunteer at some of the capital’s most exciting events with Team Westminster Ambassadors.

Film premieres, West End LIVE! and the London Marathon are just some of the opportunities available to our Ambassadors. 

Team Westminster Social Action

If you're strapped for time but want to volunteer, Social Action's one-off no-strings volunteering is ideal for you.

Fit volunteering around your busy lifestyle by registering for social action days. 

Join Team Westminster Social Action for one-off volunteering opportunities like transforming your local park or organising a local street party. 

2. Team Westminster Active for volunteers

Team Westminster Active aims to increase participation in sports volunteering with organisations and at sporting events within the city.

Get involved in sports volunteering and play a key role in delivering sports sessions in Westminster. You can also support sporting and leisure organisations with day-to-day activities without the need to participate in the sports themselves, including administration, finance, marketing and web development.

Team Westminster Active is here to help you find a sports volunteering opportunity that is right for you.

For volunteers

  1. Register online giving as many details as possible. To join Team Westminster Active, pick "sports and outdoors activities" as one of your preferred interests.
  2. Search for available opportunities on Volunteer Connect.
  3. Express your interest in a volunteering role.
  4. Organisations will contact you to explain further details about the opportunity.
  5. If you're happy with the role, you'll be invited to an informal meeting where you can discuss becoming a volunteer with the organisation.
  6. Once you're settled, contact us to let us know that you've started.

You will be contacted by the sports project coordinator via phone or email, who will provide help and support to you during your placement.

3. Team Westminster Active for organisations

Team Westminster Active aims to increase participation in sports volunteering with organisations and at sporting events within the city. If your organisation would like support with volunteers and volunteering, or if we can help promote your organisation, get in touch! 

We can provide volunteering-related training to sports clubs and physical activity providers in Westminster totally free of charge. Let us know what training would help you by filling out our short survey here.

For organisations

  1. Register online by adding your name and email address and creating a password
  2. Search for your organisation
  3. If your organisation has not been registered, continue to fill out the form
  4. You will receive a confirmation email to your registered email address allowing you to add and edit role, and contact volunteers!

You will be contacted either by email or phone by the sport project coordinator, who will help you to develop your volunteering action plan.

We can also support organisations with their volunteering action plan goals, including:

  • putting in place certain volunteering procedures and policies
  • giving one-to-one support through our organisation support surgery
  • offering training to help your volunteer management
  • helping with Active Westminster Mark certification
  • support to carry out DBS checks (if required)
  • training to help volunteers during their placements
  • funding to gain coaching qualifications

4. Team Westminster Ambassadors

Join our friendly group of volunteers, the Team Westminster Ambassadors, who provide event and local information to members of the public at high profile events throughout Westminster.

The ambassadors cover large-scale sporting, cultural and ceremonial events, as well as small-scale charity and community gatherings or walks.

Ambassadors act as on-the-ground eyes and ears, while being a friendly face to welcome visitors and occasionally lending a helping hand, like giving out medals or cheering people on.

Meet people from all walks of life and showcase the best of the city, while having fun and making a valuable contribution to your community.

Skills and requirements to be an ambassador

  • an approachable, confident and outgoing personality
  • good local knowledge of Westminster, such as ATM locations, tube stations, tourist spots, and how to find your way by foot
  • good level of conversational English
  • over the age of 18
  • eligible to volunteer in the UK under HM Government’s definitions

How to register

Register as an ambassador

Once you have completed the registration form you will be invited to book an evening induction session. The next inductions are taking place on: 

  • Monday 11 December 2017, 6pm to 8pm
  • Wednesday 10 January 2018, 6pm to 8pm
  • Monday 12 February 2018, 6pm to 8pm
  • Monday 12 March 2018, 6pm to 8pm
  • Monday 9 April 2018, 6pm to 8pm
  • Tuesday 8 May 2018, 6pm to 8pm
  • Wednesday 6 June 2018, 6pm to 8pm
  • Monday 9 July 2018, 6pm to 8pm

At the end of the induction we will sign you up for a first trial event. If your trial event is successful, you can sign up to the rest of the events as listed.

5. Team Westminster Social Action

Become a Social Action volunteer to make a difference to your local community. Opportunities with Social Action include transforming your local park, painting a school fence, or organising a local street party. Better yet, each opportunity is one-off no-strings and perfect if you want to make a difference but can’t always dedicate the time. No experience is necessary, just enthusiasm and lots of energy. Read Lenna Lou's story about volunteering with the Social Action team.

Past volunteering sessions have included:

  • painting a playground in a local school
  • lifting all the spring bedding from a park
  • creating a wildlife area in a school
  • supporting an elders' party
  • providing digital support for isolated older people
  • running a picnic for older people in Regents' Park
  • helping to maintain equipment at a children’s charity
