Take up walking with your children for Walk to School week

Thu, 14/05/2015

If you want an easy and fun way to get you and your children active then you could take part in Walk to School week. It’s a great way to start the day, helping children arrive at school fresh and alert. Walk to School week is running from 18 to 22 May 2015.

Walking is a great way for you and your children to get exercise and can contribute to the recommended 60 minutes of physical exercise a day. It not only encourages physical exercise outdoors, but is good for the environment and free to do.

Here are some tips to keep your children safe while walking to school;

  • take time to talk to your child about road safety before and during the walk
  • remember that the green man at a crossing does not mean it’s safe to cross, you still need to look and listen
  • if your children are older, make sure to do a practice walk so you know the route
  • make sure you and your child know public transport routes to school as well
