The St Mary's Hospital Education Unit is part of the Chelsea Community Hospital School.
The aim of the unit is to offer high quality teaching of a broad and balanced curriculum, including the National Curriculum, to children and young people of school age who are patients at the hospital, thereby continuing their education as normally as possible.
There is a school room, on Great Western Ward, where lessons are taught daily for those children and young people who are able to attend.
Bedside teaching is offered for children and young people in isolation units or otherwise unable to attend the school room.
Close liaison is maintained with parents/carers and medical staff during the child or young person's stay.
Where a pupil is a long-stay patient, or has recurrent admissions to the hospital, contact with his/her own school is made in order to link with the pupil's school curriculum.
The use of ICT is key to enabling pupils to access a range of educational materials and to keep contact with their own schools.
