Raising awareness of men's health

This month hundreds of thousands of people are raising awareness of men’s health by taking part in Movember. The fundraising event which encourages people to change their appearance through the growth of a new moustache for the 30 days of Movember, is a visual reminder of the charity’s aim to change the face of men’s health, specifically prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health.

The Chief Executive of Westminster City Council is captaining a team for all Westminster staff and is championing Movember. To show our support to those who live in Westminster and are taking part, we have sourced free and discounted moustache styling and post-Movember shaves at local businesses. Traditional barbers, Pall Mall Barbers, located in Fitzrovia and Trafalgar Square are giving 20% off all their services for Mo’ Bro’s with a Westminster City Save card throughout November. Find out more about this offer.

Why is Movember important?

  • the average life expectancy for men in the UK is almost four years less than women
  • men have a 14% higher risk of developing cancer than women and a 37% higher risk of dying from it
  • in 2011 more than two thirds of men in the UK were either overweight or obese
  • deaths from potentially avoidable causes accounted for approximately 24% of all deaths in the UK in 2011.
