When is consent required?

This applies to all types of works and covers all parts of the building (interior and exterior),

Work to attached buildings and certain surrounding buildings that form part of the curtilage may also need consent.

Works to places of worship in use by one of the exempt religious denominations are exempt from the requirement for listed building consent and planning permission for relevant demolition in a conservation area but not exempt from the requirements of planning permission.  For further information, including a list of exempt religious denominations, visit Historic England.

Certificate of Lawfulness

You can also apply for a Certificate of Lawfulness for proposed works to establish if proposed works to a listed building would be lawful. Applications cannot be made online. A checklist and form can be found on this page.
