Westminster City Council has worked closely with Transport for London and the Mayor of London to consult on the proposed plans to transform Oxford Street into the world’s best outdoor shopping experience.
The opening of the Elizabeth Line in 2018 offers a once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver improvements that will make this icon of London and the UK a destination of choice for many years to come.
To date, 2 consultations have taken place to provide everyone with an interest with the chance to have their say on the first step of this programme; the proposed pedestrianisation of Oxford Street West which stretches from Orchard Street to Oxford Circus.
The first consultation found that 43% of those who responded, supported the transformation. A further 19% were in support but had concerns that needed to be addressed and 30% said they were not in favour.
The second consultation, which closed on 3 January 2018, received thousands of responses. While these responses are analysed, Westminster City Council continues to remain committed to its local people. Through our Oxford Street pledges we will safeguard any concerns about pollution, traffic and street management among other matters and will ensure these are incorporated into any future plans. These pledges to you have been shared with the Mayor and Transport for London and are non-negotiable.
