Coronavirus - information and advice

Due to COVID-19, Westminster Registration Service has suspended the certificate ordering service until further notice.

If you have an urgent request based on substantially urgent circumstances please email: registeroffice@westminster.gov.uk.

If you require a certified copy of a birth, death or marriage entry please order directly from The General Register Office.

For births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships registered in Westminster, certificates for the following years only can be ordered from us online:

  • birth certificates for 1920 onwards
  • death certificates for 1970 onwards
  • marriage certificates for 1945 onwards
  • civil partnership certificates from 2005 onwards

Please do not place an order for records before these dates. See Location of Westminster Registration records for more information on how to order.

1. Guide to ordering

 Please check these guidelines before placing your order:

  1. Priority same day issue certificates must be ordered before 2pm to be issued the same working day, otherwise they will be issued for collection or posted the next working day. Please note that certificates ordered for standard service (non priority) will be issued for collection or posted after 7 working days from date of order. Please note that on the first Tuesday afternoon of each month the Westminster Registration Service is closed. Subsequently any priority service orders received on or after 10am on the first Tuesday of each month will not be picked up and processed until the following business day. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause
  2. Don't provide reference numbers from General Register Office indexes, Ancestry.co.uk, findmypast.com or similar websites as they don't relate to Westminster registers.
  3. You must provide the details of the person on the certificate.
  4. Newborn babies must be registered in person at the register office before copy certificates can be ordered online.
  5. Adoption certificates must be ordered directly from the General Register Office on 0300 123 1837.
  6. If you're unsure whether the event took place in Westminster, order your certificate from the General Register Office who hold all the records for England and Wales.

2. Fees

Certificate fee

Certificates cost £11 each.

If you need the certificate urgently, we offer a priority same day issue service for an extra £24.

Postage fee

You can collect your certificate in person for free or choose one of the following postal options:

  • guaranteed next day delivery - £34 (including priority same day issue)
  • international delivery - £10
  • 1st class signed for - £5

3. Order a certificate

Due to COVID-19, Westminster Registration Service has suspended the certificate ordering service until further notice.

Once your certificate is ready, you can collect it in person for free from the Westminster Register Office or pay a postage fee to have it sent to you.

If you select certificates to be collected by hand, please note any uncollected certificates will be disposed of after 3 months from the date of your email order confirmation.
