National lockdown: Stay at Home restrictions. More information.

On the day of your ceremony

Marriages and civil partnership ceremonies are currently suspended whilst we are observing national lockdown measures. However if there are exceptional circumstances such as the requirement to have an urgent marriage where one of those getting married is seriously ill and not expected to recover, or is to undergo debilitating treatment or life-changing surgery – please email outlining your reasons why a marriage or civil partnership needs to take place as a matter of urgency.

Our standard ceremonies last approximately 25 minutes.

Currently you both need to arrive 15 minutes before the start of your ceremony to see the registrar and confirm the details for your marriage certificate.

If you would prefer to be seen separately by the registrar, one of you should arrive 15 minutes before the start of your ceremony and the other should arrive 10 minutes before.

1. Witnesses

You will need 2 witnesses at the ceremony. They must be over the age of 16, and able to speak and understand English.

Westminster City Council staff cannot act as witnesses or supply witnesses.

2. Pre-ceremony interview

In order to ensure that all of your details are correct, the registrar must interview both of you in private just before the ceremony. You are not required to bring any documents or ID. The registrar will be happy to answer any queries you may have regarding the ceremony.

Once the formalities with the registrar have been completed, you can choose to either start the ceremony informally with your guests, or the registrar can announce your entrance into the ceremony room.

3. During the ceremony

Two registrars are required for a civil marriage or civil partnership.

One registrar will conduct the ceremony, while the other will register the marriage or civil partnership, record the details in the register and prepare the certificate to be presented to you after the ceremony.
