1. Arrival

Our standard ceremonies last approximately 25 minutes.

You will both need to arrive 15 minutes before the start of your ceremony to see the registrar and confirm the details for your marriage certificate.

If you would prefer to be seen separately by the registrar, one of you should arrive 30 minutes before the start of your ceremony and the other should arrive 15 minutes before. There is no need to let us know in advance if you wish to be seen separately.

Arriving late could result in the postponement of your wedding or civil partnership to a later time or date so that other ceremonies are not disrupted.

2. Witnesses

You will need two witnesses at the ceremony. They must be over the age of 16, and able to speak and understand English.

Westminster City Council staff cannot act as witnesses or supply witnesses.

3. Pre-ceremony interview

In order to ensure that all of your details are correct, the registrar must interview both of you in private just before the ceremony. You are not required to bring any documents or ID. The registrar will be happy to answer any queries you may have regarding the ceremony.

Once the formalities with the registrar have been completed, you can choose to either start the ceremony informally with your guests, or the registrar can announce your entrance into the ceremony room.

4. During the ceremony

Two registrars are required for a civil marriage or civil partnership.

One registrar will conduct the ceremony, while the other will register the marriage or civil partnership, record the details in the register and prepare the certificate to be presented to you after the ceremony.

5. After the ceremony

Confetti is permitted on the stone steps outside Mayfair Library, however it cannot be used within the building. Unfortunately, rice is not permitted.

For information on what is allowed at others venues, please contact them directly.
