Legislation and policies

Are you prepared for the Care Act?

The act received Royal Assent in May 2014 and is accompanied by guidance notes. Previous areas of legislation will be brought into one place, and from April 2015 there will be new duties for local authorities. The act will affect everyone who needs social care, their carers and puts responsibility on service providers.

There are six key principles within the act;

  • empowerment
  • prevention
  • proportionality
  • protection
  • partnership
  • accountability

Wellbeing is the guiding principle of the act, and practitioners have to consider all of the principles when carrying out any care and support function or making a decision that relates to a person.

There will be a number of workshops held across the various provider forums to support providers.

The People First website provide more information on the act, as well as other information.

The Department of Health have provided documents which give more details on the changes;
