Following the serious fire underneath Kingsway in April this year, Westminster City Council has worked closely with utility companies and Camden Council to facilitate large amounts of repair work under the roads around Holborn.
We are pleased to say that the Strand underpass will reopen this week, and the northbound carriageway is scheduled to reopen next week.
Cllr Richard Beddoe, Westminster City Council cabinet member for city management, said: “There is no doubting that this has been a hugely complex repair job, involving a large number of utilities and providers.
It is good news that the Strand underpass is reopening shortly, and I want to thank Londoners for being patient and finding alternative routes through the centre of the city during the past few weeks.
But the key lesson, as I outlined when this first happened, is that we need better investment in London’s infrastructure to stop this kind of incident happening in the first place.”
