Consumers are increasingly aware of the relationship between the food they eat and their health. Manufacturers and retailers are seizing the opportunity to promote and market ‘healthy options’ of food. Sales of these products are growing rapidly. A substantial proportion of meals are being consumed away from the home or as takeaways.
The Healthier Catering Commitment is a London wide project supported by the London Mayor, the Greater London Authority and the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health along with the Association of London Environmental Health Managers. The scheme has successfully been implemented in 27 London boroughs and is continuing to grow rapidly.
The Healthier Catering Commitment recognises those businesses in London that demonstrate a commitment to reducing the level of saturated fat, salt and sugar in their food. It utilises the ‘small changes make a big difference’ principle and is designed for to be easily implemented and not a burden for businesses.
To be eligible to sign up to the HCC, it is a pre-requisite that businesses achieve ‘broad compliance’ standards or above, for their food hygiene standards. This means having a Food Hygiene Rating Score of at least 3* and above.
The scheme is designed to be implemented by a dedicated Environmental Health Officer (EHO) with support from Public Health, nutritionists and other interested parties across 32 London boroughs. Businesses wishing to take part in the scheme are assessed by a visit from an EHO and will be looking to see if the business meets the criteria set.
We have adopted a tiered approach which sets out different levels of commitment from businesses. In order to be an approved HCC premises, you must meet 8 criterial. There are 4 essential criteria and an extra 3 essential criteria for those who fry food.
Catering outlets will have the opportunity to make more of a difference and achieve a HCC Silver or Gold award. As well as maintaining the seven essential criteria for HCC, there will be additional criteria to aim for in order to achieve the Silver and Gold awards.
The areas covered are:
The Food Business Operators are encouraged to sign up to as many criteria as practicable and to aim for our prestigious Gold award. The assessor may request evidence to support particular requirements and will look at the way food is prepared during a site visit.
If the business meets the requirements for the HCC, they are awarded a Healthier Catering Commitment door sticker, a certificate, social media advertising as well as other media platforms. Business will also have an opportunity to attend our annual London Wide Awards Ceremony.
The scheme is continuously promoted to increase public awareness through our website, through social media and advertisements in the local newspaper. You will have a dedicated Healthier Catering Commitment officer and the support and knowledge of professionally qualified nutritionists to help guide you through the scheme.
You will be given a HCC window sticker and a certificate to proudly promote your award on your premises. A list of award holders will also appear on the council website, which is regularly accessed by the general public.
