Health Champions sign up form

This voluntary position will give you information and skills to support your communities in living with COVID-19 and understand it in the context of wider health and wellbeing priorities.

By becoming a Health Champion, you will bring a visible health and wellbeing presence within your area, and at events throughout summer 2022. This is a great opportunity to get to know your borough better and volunteer alongside like-minded people to promote positive health and wellbeing messaging.

Health Champions have proven extremely valuable in supporting councils and they continue to be essential in connecting the councils to people in the community, whilst also linking the community with each other. As a Health Champion you will have the opportunity to choose what you would like to get involved with, including a range of community activities, trainings, supervision and information-sharing sessions.

Key activities include:

  • Engaging in COVID-19, vaccination and wider health-based conversations with people in a way that best suits you. This could include sharing information with family and friends, having informal chats with local groups, parents and carers or people you work with, putting posters in shops, restaurants, pubs, noticeboards or community spaces and sharing posts on social media.
  • Supporting community activities and events across the borough. This includes building trust and health awareness with all communities by sharing relevant information, listening sensitively, and providing safe spaces to have honest conversations on what matters most to communities in supporting their health and wellbeing as we live with COVID.

Training and support:

  • You do not need any specific background to become a Health Champion, we will provide access to a free one-day accredited training on Encouraging Vaccination Uptake and a half-day training on Motivational Interviewing to support you in your role.
  • You can also sign up to free group reflective practices with your peers to discuss challenging issues, share experiences and support each other in a safe and confidential environment.
  • Being a Health Champion will mean that you are also invited to the bi-borough Health Forum. The forums are opportunities to hear from and ask questions of speakers from across the Council and local community on a range of relevant health topics whilst also giving a platform for you to communicate your experiences and speak with other people. These take place on a bi-weekly basis.
  • In becoming a Health Champion, we ask that you commit to a minimum of four hours a month in volunteering time to support health and wellbeing initiatives. You will be able to pick these activities to suit you.
