Using the library catalogue

The online library catalogue allows Westminster library members to search for, renew and reserve books.

Logging in

Go to the library catalogue and click on 'Log in' at the top of the page. Enter your card number and your password/pin code.

Searching for items

Use the search box on the catalogue to browse through library stock.

The search automatically checks Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea and Hammersmith & Fulham libraries, but to search within just one borough, use the drop-down list on the left to choose the appropriate service.

To search a single library or a selection of libraries, do a general search without specifying the borough and then use the 'Limit search results' column on the left to narrow the results. You can also narrow your search in a range of other ways, such as Format, Publication date or Author.

You can also use the advanced search option to be more specific, as the general search uses 'fuzzy logic' to give you results even if you have spelled something incorrectly or got the name of the book or author slightly wrong.

Viewing search results

Once you have your search results, click on the title to view more information such as where the item is held, the date of publication and a short description. Click on 'Select an action', to reserve an item, add it to a saved list, email the details to yourself or a friend, or print out details.

Press the 'Reserve' button next to your chosen item. Enter your card number and password and select which library you would like to collect it from before pressing 'Reserve' again. A reservation charge will be added to your record.

Unavailable items

If you request items that are not on the catalogue, a 'Can't find it?' link will appear. Click on this link to either suggest it as an addition to the library's stock or request it for yourself ('Please order for me').

To request a book, fill in the online form with as much information as you have available. The Inter Library Loans team will then request the item be sent to your home library (usually the library you joined at, but this can be changed). At the bottom of this form, fill in your card number in the 'My ID is:' box. You will need to pay for this reservation when you pick it up from your library.

Renewing items

To renew items you have borrowed go to 'My Account', log in with your library card number and PIN/password and then click on the 'Checkouts' tab. Click in the checkbox next to the items you want to renew (or 'Select all') and then click  the 'Renew' button.

There are some factors which might prevent you from renewing, so please make sure you have been successful:

  • you cannot renew items more than eight times or if the item has been reserved by another reader
  • you may not be able to renew items if you have large, unpaid fines or other charges

You will need to return items or pay any charges if this happens.

Getting help

More help is available via the '?' icon in the top right hand corner. Many basic queries can be answered here. However this is written for everyone and is not specific to your own library service. You may find that the best source of help is from your local library.
