Cycling means business

1. Benefits of cycling

Introducing cycling schemes into your workplace has proven benefits to both your business and your employees, which go well beyond the savings made in transport costs.

“Studies show that employee turnover can be reduced by up to 13% following the introduction of a cycling scheme in the workplace. Research suggests that employees who walk or cycle to or for work have reduced absenteeism, with active employees taking 25% fewer sick days.” - TfL

Increasing cycling in your company, will also help lower your carbon footprint, reduce congestion and improve air quality as part of your corporate social responsibility and environmental policies. It can also be a valuable staff benefit.

Due to the reliability of journey times that cycling provides, they are rarely late and have more time for useful work.

Cycling employees save money and time on their commute, reduce their weight and blood pressure, lower their risk of heart disease and the most common form of diabetes.

We can offer advice on all aspects of cycling for business. Please email us at if you have any questions.

2. TfL cycling workplaces

3. Cycle to Work scheme

Cycle to Work is a government-backed initiative to promote healthier lifestyles and reduce pollution. The scheme gives you and your employees the opportunity to have a new bike and accessories through monthly salary sacrifices.

As well as being a good way to get fit and help the environment, the Cycle to Work scheme also means a saving on commuting costs of up to 39% on the cost of a new bike and accessories.

4. Deliveries by bike

More businesses are realising the advantages of using cargo carrying bicycles for local deliveries or to supply the 'final mile' as part of freight consolidation programmes. Cycle freight is part of the wider move toward cleaner and greener solutions to our transport needs and Westminster City Council wants to support businesses that can be part of that change.

We offer help and advice to Westminster-based businesses on:

  • choosing the most appropriate cargo bike for your needs
  • insurance
  • training for staff
  • freight consolidation

5. BUG (Bicycle User Group)

When setting up any campaign to either increase the number of cyclists or to improve available facilities, it's important to understand the views of your current employees. The best way to do this is to establish a Bicycle User Group (BUG).

Members of this group can act as ambassadors to promote the message and to help those new to cycling with guidance and support on the best ways of getting to and from your location.

Dr Bike sessions

At these sessions, experienced mechanics will make minor adjustments and repairs for anyone who shows up with a bike. The workshops can be anywhere there is space to set up a stand, and they make a great addition to a corporate event. Whilst not a full service, they will make sure your bikes are well adjusted and safe to ride. They can also offer advice. Book a Dr Bike session.

Driver training – CPC Courses

Last year Westminster delivered over 900 Safer Urban Driving (SUD) courses to professional fleet drivers operating in the borough. HGVs are involved in a disproportionate number of incidents involving cyclists. Businesses running fleets are encouraged to send their drivers on this course to learn the key points about staying safe. A good portion of the day is spent on bikes to give attendees the chance to experience what it feels like to ride a bike in traffic.

The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence directive affects all professional LGV and PCV drivers. Our supplier, Cycle Confident Ltd is a JAUPT approved training centre delivering approved training courses (including funded courses from TfL) for Periodic Training.

Organisations located in Westminster – we can put together a tailored package of training and events to help you and your staff get cycling more often and with greater confidence. Find out more at Cycle Confident.
