Beat ‘Blue Monday’ with free exercise sessions

The third Monday in January is known as ‘Blue Monday’, allegedly the most gloomy day of the year.  A combination of winter weather and feeling sluggish after the festive season contribute to feeling ‘blue’.

Help is at hand thanks to Everyone Active and Westminster City Council - who operate seven leisure centres in Westminster – who are hosting free exercise sessions in the borough to help people enjoy a Not-So-Blue Monday.  Physical activity is known to lift your spirits and mood by boosting endorphins and feel-good hormones.  Any physical activity will help and working out with friends or others is particularly good as you get a further lift from the social interaction.

Cllr Iain Bott, Westminster City Council Cabinet Member for Sports, Culture and Community said: “January can be a long, cold month for some people, so I would encourage everyone to visit one of our leisure centres and try out these free sessions. Our leisure centres offer activities to suit all ages and abilities, so anyone looking to get more active can find an exercise routine that suits them. As well as the ‘Blue Monday’ sessions, we have a free ActiveWestminster card offering discounts on leisure activities and gym memberships, including free swimming for residents over 60.”
