Annual electoral register canvass

We seek to ensure that all Westminster residents who are eligible to vote appear on the register of electors.

Annual canvass

Every year we are required by law to contact all households within the borough to check who is eligible to register to vote. The process of conducting the canvass has now changed.

Not all households will receive the same form. All electors successfully matched against national and local records will receive a confirmation letter, rather than the usual canvass form.

Your household will receive either of the following 2 letters:

  • letter of confirmation which will confirm the details of all registered electors at your address - you do not need to respond to the confirmation letter if all the details are correct and you only need to respond if this information needs to be updated
  • household canvass form - any household not matched by local and national records, will be sent an ordinary household canvass form which you are legally required to respond to

Ways to respond to the household canvass form

You must respond to household canvass form even if there are no changes. Changes can be made online to either add, amend or delete electors or to opt in or out of the Open Register. You will need the 2 part security code provided on the household canvass form in order to use this service.

Respond to the household canvass

If there are no changes either call 080 8284 1426 and when prompted enter part 1 and part 2 of your security code, or text 07786 209426 with your 2 security codes separated by a space. The 2 part security code will be provided on the household canvass form.

You can also respond by completing the household canvass form and sending it back by post using the enclosed pre-paid envelope; or by scanning the form and emailing it as an attachment to [email protected].

New residents who are not already registered, will also need to register to vote.  (please refer to the 'reasons to register' section for more information).

Ways to respond to confirmation letter

You do not need to respond if all the details on your household confirmation letter are correct and includes everyone eligible to register to vote at this address.

However if you need to make any changes, you can respond online or by post.
