A brand-new adventure playground in Paddington Recreation Ground has been unveiled by Westminster City Council this week.
Designed by Ruth Willmott Associates and Playscheme, and part-funded by Westminster City Council, the playground features bespoke equipment that offers inclusive, creative, and stimulating play for local residents of all ages and abilities.
Cllr Iain Bott, Westminster City Council Cabinet Member for Sports, Culture and Community, said:
“As a City for All, the new playground at Paddington Rec is a fantastic place to encourage Westminster’s children and young people to get active. With wheelchair access and sensory experiences, we’ve made sure anyone can take part and enjoy.”
The new development of the playground area follows feedback from local residents in early 2018, who asked for a more natural feel to the space, with updated and creative features.
Managed by Everyone Active, the playground officially opened on Saturday 27 April 2019 during the Active Westminster Open Community Weekend. The space has unique play equipment that is suitable for all abilities, including a wheelchair accessible spinning disk and tango swing seats.
An innovative sensory trail, which has been designed with inclusivity in mind, has also been added which allows visitors to explore the playground in different ways and at their own pace. The bespoke trail space provides a stimulating way to interact with the new flowers, plants, and trees around them, particularly for those who may not use standard play equipment.
Careful consideration has also been put into the area surrounding the playground, with twice the number of benches on site, including one wheelchair accessible, as well as integrated landscaping and trees to build a natural and interactive environment for visitors.
