Trees

Our Tree Section manages all Council-owned trees in parks, squares, open spaces, streets, schools, cemeteries and properties administered by the City Council.

We deal with applications to carry out work on trees protected by Tree Preservation Orders and trees growing in conservation areas. Planning applications for development, which may have any affect on trees or incorporate new planting, are also assessed by us. New Tree Preservation Orders are made on suitable trees in private ownership.

We also provide a free tree advisory service and are committed to promoting tree replacement and planting within the City. Many new trees are planted each year, especially in the streets.

A sponsored scheme which enables residents and businesses, to meet the cost of street tree planting is in operation.

As part of an ongoing maintenance programme, mature street trees are pruned on a 2-3 year cycle, and street trees are regularly checked and maintained.

Tree walks can also be arranged with interested groups and this service is provided free of charge.
