Taxis

undefinedA taxi rank is recognised by yellow bay markings and the word “TAXI” painted on the road surface. Yellow lines (single or double) and chevrons indicating loading restrictions may protect the rank.

There are two types of rank: appointed or permitted.  They are for the sole use of Hackney Carriages (black cabs)

Appointed ranks

Informally appointed ranks allow taxis to park for either 24hrs or for a period during the day or night. Details of the times that taxis are permitted to park, the length and location and the number of taxis that can use the rank are all displayed on a nearby notice.

Permitted (formal) ranks

Permitted or formal ranks are protected for use by taxis by virtue of a Traffic Management Order, and are protected “at any time”. These ranks display the “Clearway” no stopping sign, with the word “taxis only” on a plate underneath.

Enforcement of Taxi Ranks

Taxis

Appointed ranks merely exempt taxis from parking restrictions during the times of operation of the rank.

Outside of the hours of operation of the rank, the vehicle may be issued with a Penalty Charge Notice.

Taxis are not permitted to park outside the rank or extrude from the end of the rank.  Doing so is subject to enforcement.

Other vehicles

Other vehicles are not permitted to park in taxi ranks and may be issued with a Penalty Charge Notice.
