Additional on street charging points for electric vehicles

electric vehicle at charging pointWestminster City Council is set to roll out the largest on street electric car charging service in the UK.

Following a successful pilot scheme, we will be installing an extra 10 points outside homes and offices, and in prime locations in the West End.

There are already 48 existing charging points in 13 of our Westminster City Council car parks and two pioneering on street points in Covent Garden (Wellington and Southampton Streets).

It is anticipated that all the posts will be installed by Easter. Precise details of new locations for recharging points are being finalised following a survey of all 250 members of the EcoMark electric car club in London.

Customers will have to pay a one-off fee to cover administration costs to register and use the posts. Thereafter, the use of charging posts is free. Customers will then receive a personalised key to wave close to the post. This will trigger a welcome message and start charging.

This is one of a number of initiatives and financial incentives that we have introduced to encourage the use of Eco vehicles. Westminster has the highest levels of air pollution in the UK, and the use of Eco vehicles can make a huge difference to reducing these levels.
