The City Council currently suspend approximately 8,000 parking spaces each year for gully cleaning on Westminster's streets. Typically this involves suspending parking bays in several streets for an entire day.
However the cleaning of gullies is a process that can take as little as 5 minutes per gully which means that all gullies for a particular day are usually cleaned before midday. Effectively this means the majority of suspended bays could be used by motorists once the work has been completed. Unfortunately as the signs are still in place motorists can not use the bays otherwise they run the risk of their vehicles being issued Penalty Charge Notices by parking attendants.
Starting from Friday 9 March until further notice, the gully cleaning crew will place a sticker over the existing suspension label to show that the work has been completed and that the bay can be used again. This service will be extended to include tree pruning activities later this year in September.
