We announced our decision on 27th June 2007 to extend our Pay by Phone Parking service to all parts of the borough.
As many of you will be aware, we introduced cashless parking in the West End and one other area of the borough last year in a six month pilot to help reduce theft from parking meters and make life easier for motorists through coin-free convenience and remote top-ups.
Councillor Danny Chalkley, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Transport said: “The evidence has shown that there is overwhelming support for the wider use of this new technology.
"We launched Pay by Phone Parking in October last year to give motorists a new, coin-free way of paying for their parking. Being able to top-up your meter on the move without returning to your vehicle provides greater flexibility for motorists and helps them avoid unnecessary fines."
The parking meters and cash-based Pay and Display machines will be gradually removed from October onwards, with the aim of no longer accepting coins on street anywhere in Westminster by December 2008. In the meantime, the Pay by Phone pilot has been extended to cover Parking Zone E (Mayfair & St James), which will see 'Pay by Phone Only' bays replacing all meter bays on 28th August 2007.
