Western Extension – the approved scheme

The Mayor of London announced on 30 September 2005 that the Western Extension of the congestion charging scheme will go-ahead.

The extended zone will become operational on 19 February 2007.

Despite a significant number of objections received through the public consultation stages, the Mayor of London has approved a scheme that differs little from what was proposed. The only amendments are:

  • Minor changes to the residents’ discount zone - outside of Westminster
  • The charging end time will reduce from 18.30 to 18.00
  • From September 2006, a ‘pay next day’ charge option will be introduced.

The City Council expressed disappointment to the Mayor of London’s announcement and will continue to lobby for improvements that would reduce hardship for those residents and local businesses that will be affected.
