Family learning sessions at Westminster libraries
Westminster Adult Education Service (WAES) runs family learning workshops in Westminster Libraries every six or seven weeks. All workshops are craft based and planned for parents and children to work together. New skills and ideas can be taken home to be developed further.

Catherine Muchenje was born in Zimbabwe and came to London in 2000. She was very shy and lacked confidence, but realised that she needed to develop her skills and improve her English. She took the opportunities offered to her by Wilberforce Primary school and went along to some Family Learning workshops. She found courses in Literacy and Numeracy which focused on the school curriculum useful for both herself and her children. During the summer, Catherine and her children joined a Family Learning art course. The whole family designed and made waistcoats
“They were beautiful,” says Catherine. What she remembers most about the classes was an inspiring trip to the National Portrait Gallery: “The children wanted to draw what they could see and were excited about being artistic at home.”
