Improvements for Praed Street
Public Lighting
A new remotely monitored public lighting system will be installed, comprising column-mounted lights. The columns will stand 10m tall with a standard light positioned at the top. They will also have a back light positioned over the public footway at a height of 6m. These columns have space for Wi-Fi technology and are also able to accommodate either CCTV cameras or festive decorations.
This variable system allows sufficient light for current conditions whilst running at just 75% power output. This saves energy and reduces the contrast between the illumination of Praed Street and its side streets.
Paving
The asphalt paving currently present will be replaced with fibre reinforced artificial stone paving. This design will provide additional protection from the cracking that is caused by motor vehicles that over-run the footways, and the mechanised street cleaning vehicles.
This new paving will be treated with "Magic-Cote", a proven product that enables grease and chewing-gum to be more easily removed.
Footway Widening
Appropriate areas for increasing footway width (without affecting traffic and parking requirements) have been identified.
Re-surfacing of Private Forecourts
With the agreement of property owners, private forecourts in poor condition will be overlaid with a resin-bound material on top of a waterproof and flexible sealant. This will address problems with leaks in basements and prevent the surface cracking from movement.
Street Clutter Reduction
All identified unnecessary street clutter and road signs will be removed, in order to achieve a tidier street environment.
