Access Improvements

The "access improvements" element of the Half Penny Steps project aims to improve access to, along, and across the Grand Union Canal, in order to better connect surrounding neighbourhoods with the Harrow Road district shopping centre and the green canal corridor.

These improvements will directly contribute to the wider regeneration objectives for Harrow Road:

  1. reducing crime and disorder
  2. supporting local economic development
  3. improving the street environment

In 2007, we undertook a series of surveys and visual audits to identify any impediments to travel for pedestrians and cyclists, signage requirements, and general access issues within the project area. We consulted local residents, businesses and visitors to the area, and local stakeholders including Local Area Renewal Partnerships, the Disability Access Group, Harrow Road Traders' Association, and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

We have now identified a series of short, medium and long term improvements. These are broadly focused around the Great Western Road area between Westbourne Park tube station and the Prince of Wales Junction, the canal towpath and Meanwhile Gardens, the vicinity of Ha'Penny Steps footbridge and the local stretch of the Harrow Road.

Status: access improvement proposals being finalised
