St John's Wood High Street

During 2006 the council made a number of improvements to St John's Wood High Street to retain it as a vibrant district shopping centre:

  • Installed new pavements and better street lighting.
  • Removed 'street clutter', including unnecessary street signs and bollards.
  • Put in new parking 'pay and display' machines that accept credit cards as well as cash for the public's convenience.

Commenting on the improvements, Jamie Goldstone, a manager at Winkworth estate agents in St John's Wood said: "The High Street is the main focal point of St John's Wood with its abundance of fashionable shops, cafes and boutiques. There are many coffee shops in the area which are enjoyed by most of the local residents, especially us estate agents - it's like our second office! Being able to sit outside and enjoy the sunshine (while it lasts) is quite a treat.''

"We have noticed Westminster Council have recently made vast improvements to the pavements along the High Street which definitely has made a positive difference to the area."

Circus Road

The developments of the Circus Road area will complete the Civic Streets makeover of the St John's Wood shopping area.

The improvements will include:

  • New lighting between the junctions with Wellington Road and Aquila Street;
  • New pavements on the north and south side of Circus Road with fibre reinforced artificial stone paving, between the junctions with Wellington Road and St Anne's Terrace;
  • The removal of unnecessary street clutter and road signs to further tidy up the street environment; and
  • A renovation of the two seating areas close to the junction with Wellington Road

We will also be able to offer retailers and building owners a new private forecourt surface successfully demonstrated in a recent scheme on Praed Steet close to Paddington Station.

Work is provisionally programmed to start at the end of January 2009 and be completed by the end of July 2009. We will work hard to keep this to a minimum and when the improvements are complete we are confident that you will see a significant improvement in the quality of Circus Road.
