Civic Streets – Rejuvenating the Tachbrook Street and Warwick Way Shopping Area

Westminster City Council will soon be consulting local residents, businesses and market traders on a series of options for improving the Tachbrook Street and Warwick Way district shopping area. The Civic Streets project is part of the Council's City Recovery Programme. It aims to improve the street environment and boost the local economy.

We have developed a series of options for the shopping area which will improve the street environment and provide the basic infrastructure and management support to help Tachbrook Street market and local businesses.

The support of local businesses, traders and the community is vital to ensure long term success of the scheme. As the improvements will be implemented in several phases, we hope to find out from the consultation which part of the district shopping area should be improved in the first phase and the order in which work on the remaining sections should be undertaken. We also wish to explore how disruption to traders and local businesses can be minimised during the works.

The key options for consideration are:

  • Improving Tachbrook Street Market to support existing and new market traders by installing power and lighting, providing more parking and storage facilities and improving the appearance of the market by investing in new stalls.
  • Planting trees and providing seating in Tachbrook Street market and the adjoining pedestrianised area next to George Eliot House.
  • Creating better linkage between Tachbrook Street and Upper Upper Tachbrook Street by improving the existing crossing facility on Warwick Way.
  • Improving pavements on Warwick Way, Tachbrook Street, Denbigh Street and Churton Street.
  • Repaving and widening some pavements on Wilton Road to provide additional space for pedestrians and seating outside restaurants and cafes.
  • Installing a cycle hire station close to Tachbrook Street Market.
  • Providing the facilities for regular specialist markets to operate in Tachbrook Street or Upper Tachbrook Street.

Further details of the consultation will be available in due course, but in the meantime, if you wish to register your interest or put forward your views, please contact Martin Whittles on 0207 641 3040 or email mwhittles@westminter.gov.uk or Sarah Speirs on 01256 318822 or email sarah.speirs@wspgroup.com.
