Scheme Inception

A design study was commissioned by the Council in 2005/06 to assess the condition of Westminster's seven main district shopping centres outside of the West End, and recommend ways in which they could be improved. The Civic Streets Scheme was established as a result of this study's findings; its objective being to invest in and renew every one of these district shopping streets.

Civic Streets Projects Completed or Underway

1. The first (pilot) shopping centre to be 'renewed' under the Civic Streets initiative was St. John's Wood High Street. Improvements to this centre's street environment were completed in 2006.
   
   
2. The Harrow Road district shopping centre was chosen to be the next Civic Streets project. Improvements to this area began in 2006. The second phase of renewal is currently underway, and focuses on regeneration of the Prince of Wales Junction, Shop Fronts and Street Trading, and Half Penny Steps.
   
   
3. Work has also begun for Praed Street district shopping centre. The first phase of this project will be implemented in 2008.
   
   

Future Projects

In future years and subject to funding, the Civic Streets Scheme will focus on the renewal of the following areas:

• Church Street
• Marylebone High Street
• Queensway and Westbourne Grove
• Pimlico's Wilton Road and Warwick Way
